The Public Pulse: Trump team lacked evidence; Judges are unfair; Coach needs to grow up | Letters

When, Senator, will you finally stand up for the United States and say that President-Elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris have won the election? When will you, Senator, publicly renounce Mr. Trump’s fallacious claim of election victory? When, Senator, will you publicly announce your support for the rule of law and the elected officials in every state? When, Senator?

Fairness: Do the math

Gov. Pete Ricketts was reported in the World-Herald Dec. 1 as favoring a one-candidate-take-all Electoral College system for our fair state. Under existing rules, Nebraska allots its votes minimally proportionally, with one vote going to the winner of each congressional district, and two more going to the winner of the state as a whole. Thus, in the 2020 election, four votes were allotted to Donald Trump and one to Joe Biden, who won the 2nd District, where most of the voters live in or near Omaha.

Banished from the Trump legal team, attorney Sidney Powell still finds a guest chair on Fox

What Dobbs didn’t mention is that eight days earlier, President Trump’s reelection campaign had put out a statement dropping Powell from its legal effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The statement, which was released by Trump attorneys Rudolph W. Giuliani and Jenna Ellis, followed conspiratorial comments that Powell had made at a news conference three days earlier, part of a larger track record of questionable accusations lobbed by the former federal prosecutor. A Trump campaign official told The Washington Post at the time that Powell “was too crazy even for the president.”

But Powell’s lack of official credentials with the Trump campaign was no drawback for the most popular opinion hosts on Fox Business Network and Fox News. In addition to her appearance on Dobbs’s show, she was interviewed on Monday night by Sean Hannity, who hosts the most-watched show on Fox News. Hannity also hosted

Firms team up to tackle systemic race issues

At the virtual summit of the recently formed Law Firm Antiracism Alliance this fall, Louisiana lawyer Jamila Johnson walked through the ways that post-Reconstruction and Jim Crow laws inscribed white supremacist beliefs into criminal law—and how the effects are still felt in practical and painful ways.

This is not a new conversation for Johnson, managing attorney for the Promise of Justice Initiative’s Unanimous Jury Project, an initiative that fought against a Louisiana law giving divided juries the ability to convict people of serious crimes, disproportionately sending African Americans to prison. Although the Louisiana law was overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court in April, prior cases were not vacated, and

Trump campaign legal team disavows attorney Sidney Powell

The Trump campaign’s legal team is distancing itself from firebrand conservative attorney Sidney Powell after a tumultuous several days in which she made multiple incorrect statements about the voting process, propounded unsupported and complex conspiracy theories and vowed to “blow up” Georgia with a “biblical” court filing.

“Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own. She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team. She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity,” Rudolph W. Giuliani and another lawyer for Trump, Jenna Ellis, said in a statement Sunday.

The statement came days after Powell and Giuliani appeared in public together to allege, without foundation, widespread fraud in the presidential election. Barely more than a week ago, Trump himself hailed Powell’s role as one of his lawyers, tweeting that she was part of a team of “wonderful lawyers and representatives” led by Giuliani.

Trump Team Disavows Lawyer Who Peddled Conspiracy Theories on Voting

President Trump’s campaign on Sunday disavowed Sidney Powell, one of his lawyers who has pushed false claims of voter fraud, after she made wild accusations that Republican officials had been involved in a payoff scheme to manipulate voting machines.

The repudiation of Ms. Powell, which came at the hands of former allies like Rudolph W. Giuliani, added unwanted drama for the president’s legal team at a moment when it is losing case after case, offering a public window into the chaotic nature and amateurish tactics of most of its attempts so far to fight the election outcome.

Even as many campaign aides, White House advisers and professional lawyers want nothing to do with the claims, a small group of lawyers for Mr. Trump’s campaign has presided over a widely mocked, circuslike legal effort to try to invalidate votes and prevent states from certifying their results.

Sidney Powell Responds To Trump Team Distancing: ‘#KrakenOnSteroids’

Attorney Sidney Powell, who on Sunday night was tossed under the bus by President Donald Trump’s lawyers Jenna Ellis and Rudy Giuliani, responded by releasing a statement saying that she will continue to represent the “#WeThePeople” — and adding at the end of her statement the hashtag “#KrakenOnSteroids.”

Powell appeared undeterred after the Trump Legal Team distanced themselves from her, while pledging to continue fighting against what she alleges of widespread voter fraud occurring during the 2020 election due to the vote-counting machines. Powell has so far failed to provide any evidence backing her claims.

“I understand today’s press release,” Powell told CBS News. “I will continue to represent #WeThePeople who had their votes for Trump and other Republicans stolen by massive fraud through Dominion and Smartmatic, and we will be filing suit soon. The chips will fall where they may, and we will defend the foundations

The Trump administration sought to distance itself from attorney Sidney Powell on Thursday, insisting she is ‘not a member’ of their legal team – despite the president tweeting only last week that she was.

In a written statement issued by Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, and his senior campaign adviser, Jenna Ellis, they said: ‘Sidney Powell is practicing law on her own.

‘She is not a member of the Trump Legal Team,’ the message continued. ‘She is also not a lawyer for the President in his personal capacity.’

The announcement was made a day after a judge dismissed the campaign’s lawsuit seeking to halt President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in Pennsylvania, dealing a major blow to Trump’s flailing efforts to overturn his November 3 election loss.

Just days earlier, Powell had appeared on-stage alongside Giuliani for a bizarre press conference Thursday at the Republican
