Elected as reformer, Jefferson County’s incoming district attorney is pushing out office’s top prosecutors

Alexis King

Alexis King convinced voters in Jefferson and Gilpin counties that she should be their next district attorney on the promise that she’d reform the prosecutor’s office — and she hasn’t waited to be sworn in to make sweeping changes.

King will cut 10 people from the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office when she takes charge in January, she acknowledged in a brief interview Thursday. Those losing their jobs include six senior prosecutors and three deputy district attorneys, those involved told The Denver Post, wiping away decades of experience and senior leadership in the office.

“At the end of the day, it’s about ensuring that we are bringing and performing ethical prosecutions, protecting public safety, that are also aligned with my values and making sure we have a workplace that is open to all identities,” King said Thursday, adding the dismissals are “100%” part of her effort to reform

Jefferson Parish School Board members clash with AG lawyer over virtual learning discipline policy | Education

Jefferson Parish School Board members sparred with a lawyer from the Attorney General Jeff Landry’s office Wednesday night over the board’s proposal to extend its disciplinary reach into the viewable area of a student’s workspace during online instruction.

The exchange was the latest installment in the ongoing saga spurred by the school system’s decision earlier this year to suspend Ka’Mauri Harrison, a fourth grader at Woodmere Elementary in Harvey, for six days because a teacher saw him move a BB gun in his room while he took an online test.

The school system drew criticism from numerous groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, the National Rifle Association and Landry, who sent a representative Wednesday to decry the proposal, which sailed through on a 9-0 vote nonetheless.

The policy requires them to have a quiet, well-lit ‘classroom’ space — free, to the extent possible, from toys, images, messages, personal property

Will Sutton: Jefferson Parish Schools violates state law, and weakens the BB gun case | Columnist Will Sutton

Louisiana public school districts should learn a lesson from Jefferson Parish Schools. Fast.

Plain and simple, if the Louisiana State Legislature enacts a law, they probably mean it should be followed.

The Jefferson school district has gotten a lot of national attention because it suspended Ka’Mauri Harrison, a fourth grader who moved a BB rifle in his bedroom to get it out of the way. Based on school records and Ka’Mauri’s dad, he wasn’t playing with the gun, he wasn’t threatening anyone and he had his hands on it for a short time.

This happened in a Marrero bedroom Ka’Mauri, 9, shares with two brothers in a home with five kids. It’s a room for sleep, games, toys and, these days, school. Ka’Mauri spent his suspension at home, where he attends class.
