Deborah Gonzalez makes history as Georgia’s first Hispanic district attorney

Deborah Gonzalez has made history several times over by winning the runoff in her race for district attorney in Georgia.

Gonzalez told NBC News her win Tuesday for Western Judicial Circuit district attorney makes her the first Latina to be elected a district attorney in the state, the first woman to serve as a district attorney in the circuit and the first Puerto Rican woman in the country to be elected a district attorney.

“I won,” she said in a telephone call with NBC News.

Gonzalez was able to compete for district attorney after the state’s Supreme Court ruled unanimously in her favor in her lawsuit against Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp. Kemp used a 2018 state law to delay the district attorney’s election until November 2022, prompting the court fight.

Gonzalez, a Democrat who ran as a progressive candidate, is a former state representative for Georgia House district

Lindsey Graham pressured Georgia’s secretary of state about legally cast ballots, report says

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Monday that U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham asked him whether he had the power to reject certain absentee ballots, a question he interpreted as a suggestion to toss out legally cast votes.

Raffensperger made the comments to The Washington Post, saying he’s faced rising pressure from fellow Republicans who want to see Democrat Joe Biden’s narrow lead in the state reversed. Nearly 5 million votes were cast in the presidential election in Georgia, and Biden was leading President Donald Trump by about 14,000 votes.

Raffensperger’s comments came as election officials across the state were working to complete a hand recount of votes in the presidential race.

When Georgia voters return an absentee ballot, they have to sign an oath on an outer envelope. County election office workers are required to ensure the signature matches the one on the absentee ballot application

Trump campaign requests recount of Georgia’s presidential race

President Donald Trump’s campaign requested a recount of votes in the Georgia presidential race on Saturday, a day after state officials certified results showing Democrat Joe Biden won the state, as his legal team presses forward with attacks alleging widespread fraud without proof.

Georgia’s results showed Biden beating Trump by 12,670 votes out of about 5 million cast, or 0.25%. State law allows a candidate to request a recount if the margin is less than 0.5%. Republican Gov. Brian Kemp formalized the state’s slate of 16 presidential electors.

The Trump campaign sent a hand-delivered letter to the secretary of state’s office requesting the recount in an election that has been fraught with unfounded accusations of fraud by Trump and his supporters.

Georgia’s secretary of state to certify Joe Biden as winner

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on Friday will certify President-elect Joe Biden’s win and the results of all the other races in the state. In a statement, Raffensperger said this “will affirm that all 159 counties have provided to the state the total votes tabulated for each state and federal candidate.”

Raffensperger told reporters earlier Friday that Mr. Biden had definitively won the state, after the state’s hand recount was completed on Thursday.

“I believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct. The numbers reflect the will of the people,” Raffensperger, a Republican, said.

He also called for legislation to be passed to improve the state’s voting system, such as reforms in absentee voting and implementing audits in areas where there were voting discrepancies.

The hand recount upheld the original outcome produced by the machine tally of votes cast, according to a statement from Raffensberger on

ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia’s top elections official said Friday that he will certify that Joe Biden won the state’s presidential election after a hand tally stemming from a mandatory audit affirmed the Democrat’s lead over Republican President Donald Trump.

His office stumbled on the final step, prematurely announcing that the certification was complete while only unofficial results remained on the public website. Forty minutes after the big news, the secretary of state’s office corrected its news release and said the results would be released later.

“Working as an engineer throughout my life, I live by the motto that numbers don’t lie,” Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said during a news conference at the state Capitol. “As secretary of state, I believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct. The numbers reflect the verdict of the people, not a decision

Georgia’s secretary of state on election recount: “The numbers reflect the will of the people”

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger told reporters on Friday that President-elect Joe Biden had definitively won the state, after the state’s hand recount was completed on Thursday and Mr. Biden’s victory there was reaffirmed

“I believe that the numbers that we have presented today are correct. The numbers reflect the will of the people,” Raffensperger, a Republican, said.

He also called for some legislation to be passed to improve the state’s voting system, such as reforms in absentee voting and implementing audits in areas were there were voting discrepancies.

The hand recount upheld the original outcome produced by the machine tally of votes cast, according to a statement from Raffensberger on Thursday.

“Georgia’s historic first statewide audit reaffirmed that the state’s new secure paper ballot voting system accurately counted and reported results,” Raffensberger said. “This is a credit to the hard work of our county and local elections
